As Plato and Ellis aptly explain, a complete education includes high academic achievement as well as cultivation of a strong social and moral fabric. Plato’s Scheme of Education: Plato was of the opinion that education must begin at an early age. Mann’s enterprising ideas easily grab my attention because they speak to my own personal experience as a Reading Clinician on the Crow Indian Reservation. Education, however, must be imparted to all in the early stages without any discrimination. He claims that education may act as the “great equalizer” of society. This preparation for the future life is almost rejected by modern educational philosophers like Rousseau and Dewey. Plato believed that early education must be related to literature, as it would bring out the best of the soul. His suffering has ended, for, as Mann states, “…such a thing never did happen, and never can happen, as that an intelligent and practical body of men should be permanently poor (1848).”  An educated community will not remain dominated by others. On Education and National Welfare. Taking the metaphor one step further, Plato explains that understanding the concept of good requires many previous discoveries, but this concept of good is the ultimate goal. But this rejection of the aim to prepare children for future life does not in any sense divest Plato's thought of its significance even in the 21st century. Few students will grasp this concept and bring themselves to the level of those in the upper-class. Through this process educators hope to mold citizens with the knowledge and drive to better humanity. The education system in Athens was privately controlled unlike in Sparta where the education was state-controlled. He no longer views himself as lesser, for he is afforded the same opportunities as the wealthy man. He presents education as, “…a process by which a person gains understanding of self, as well as the environment (Ellis, Schooling and Education, n.d.).”  In Ellis’ view, education encompasses academic schooling as well as many other learning experiences. Secondly, music and thirdly arts were the subjects of early education. The education system did not end here. He held the view that without education, the individual would make no progress any more than a patient who believed in curing himself by his own loving remedy without giving up his luxurious mode of living. His guiding principle is that, “Nothing must be admitted in education which does not … Industry is almost non-existent on the reservation, meaning many people are unemployed and rely on per-caps or money from the tribe to survive. Therefore, he believed that education must not be forced, but should be made a sort of amusement as it would enable the teacher to understand the natural bent of mind of the child. The problem however, lies in that those few are then separate from their community. Plato thinks education as a key for a society and he stress on education, for this purpose he want to go to the extreme. But it is this concept of good that gives man the will to affect change. These intelligent individuals become producers, and a society of producers is one that thrives independent of others. He states, education, “…gives each man the independence and the means by which he can resist the selfishness of other men (Mann, 1848).”  Once he is educated, the poor man is no longer reliant upon the wealthy man; he has been liberated. In Plato's view, the generally accepted notion of education constituted the forcing of thoughts into children's minds. Plato’s aim, then, in these early dialogues primarily, is critical: that is, to tear apart the inadequate moral views of others. What are those ideas, and what relevance do they have to your own philosophy? He believed that education should be holistic, including facts, skills, physical discipline, music and art. In order to make sure that children study well, Plato insisted that children be brought up in a hale and healthy environment and that the atmosphere implant ideas of truth and goodness. In other words, every school must have a gymnasium and a playground in order to develop the physique and health of children and make them resistant to any disease.
